Rheem  manufacturing began in Auckland and Wellington in the late sixties and was the first overseas venture of Rheem Australia, an Australian manufacturer of drums & water heaters. Today, the company is part of Rheem USA which one of the largest water heater manufacturers in the world.

Rheem New Zealand first began manufacturing water heaters in 1969 in Wellington at Wigan St. The first mains pressure model was gas fired, the electric water heaters were first manufactured in 1973.
