Word has reached us that Rinnai is now offering a 190L cylinder as part of the Rinnai mains pressure stainless steel thermosiphon / wetback range. According to the Rinnai team, this product is designed to replace the typical 180L low-pressure copper wetback cylinder.
The Rinnai 190L stainless steel wetback cylinder was released in September 2018, just a year after the release of the 250L and 300L cylinders. All of the tanks have a maximum working pressure of 850kPa and come with a 10-year warranty.
How does it work?
Like most wetback cylinders, Rinnai cylinders use the thermosiphon effect to circulate the mains pressure water through a coil inside the cylinder. This does away with the need for a pump, which means less energy cost and a stable supply of hot water – even in the event of a power outage.
These wetback cylinders provide a modern way of using wetback systems to heat our homes. Traditionally, a wetback must be connected to an open-vented low pressure water circuit to prevent explosion due to thermal expansion. On the other hand, Rinnai’s thermosiphon cylinder allows you to connect a mains pressure hot water cylinder to a wetback fire. The technology is not new but there’s more to this product.
Notable features
The impressive thing with Rinnai thermosiphon / wetback cylinders is the duplex stainless steel 2304 construction of the inner cylinder, which is manufactured locally in New Zealand. We sent our resident gas installer on a simple mission recently, a like for like replacement of a Rinnai HD250 Instantaneous Water Heater. This particular unit was installed on a roof, so our installer had to go up there to get the job done.
Here we have the old unit, a HD250 that was using for a commercial premises. It did it’s time and served well but it’s time had come, and it was due for replacement. The client wanted a like for like replacement with a new HD250, which made this installation an easy one. All the existing fittings and pipework could be used, and our installer could just install the new unit in the old unit’s place. Easy!
With the new unit installed, the client could go back to enjoying hot water, which is particularly important for them since they run a food related business.

Gas appliances, like most other appliances, sometimes need repair and maintenance. Luckily, many times it is possible to repair your gas appliance, not having to replace it with a new one. We recently had to do just that.
The customer contacted us with a problem with their Rinnai Califont water heater. They were not getting hot water and needed it working for the weekend. So they called us to the rescue.
Our technician went out to check it out and did some tests to see why the unit was playing up. As you can see, there is quite some corrosion on the inside of the unit, which can mess with the electrical connections and cause the unit to fail. Other problems that can occur with these water heaters include:
Incorrect burner settings resulting in either too hot or too cold water
Faulty controllers
Issues with gas supply – this can cause both water pressure and heating issues
Mineral build up in the unit if not flushed regularly
Low water pressure (which can be because of the unit not heating up water in time – usually a gas pressure issue)
Ignition failure
Those these are generally reliable units, sometimes a bit of repair or maintenance work is required. All the issues listed above are avoided if regular maintenance and servicing on the unit is done.
Once our technician tracked down the cause of the issue, which in this case was caused by corroded electrical connections. By cleaning the contact surface of the culprit connections and replacing the ones necessary, he was able to resolve the problem. Afterwards he tested all taps in the house to ensure that there was hot water in all of them, which there was. The client was advised and was happy to have their hot water going again.
What can you do if you find your gas appliances not working? First and foremost, you need to ensure that you do not have a gas leak. While rare, they do happen and can be a dangerous situation. The most obvious way to tell is you will smell the gas. You will most likely also hear a hissing sound near gas appliances or pipes. This is a big tell-tale sign. If you do have a gas leak, the first thing to do is shut off the gas supply – shut off your LPG bottles or if you have natural gas, it can usually be turned off at the meter. If you do not know how to do this or you still have a leak, call us immediately on 0800 692 672.
If the unit is not working and you are not getting hot water, check to see if your appliance is showing an error code. Some appliances such as the Rinnais show an error code to help you identify the problem.
The best thing to do in these situations is to give us a call. Gas can be dangerous and if you think you have a fault with your system, calling a professional is t he best course of action. We can quickly diagnose the problem and let you know what options are.
We had a customer contact us with an old heat pump hot water cylinder which had failed, and they wanted something new to heat their water. We thought the Rheem 27 unit would fit their needs perfectly.
As natural gas was available, we decided to go with the Rheem 27 Natural Gas unit to provide their hot water. After our gas fitting completed the system, he performed a test which gave results of static gas pressure 3.1kpa working pressure 2.6kpa, which is within the requirements. It also required drilling into the brick wall, not the usual concrete to install this unit.

Unlike traditional water heaters that take up space in a hall cupboard and heat and store water for the household to use, the Rheem 27 heats cold water as it passes through the unit. If you have long showers, or a large family drawing lots of water through showers, baths, the laundry and kitchen, traditional water heaters can run out of hot water. They then take upto 3 hours to fill and reheat the stored water. The Rheem 27 will virtually never run out of hot water.
The Rheem 27 has an “IQ” function – this allows the unit to identify when there is a disparity in the water temperature and even the temperature out. This is especially important when there is frequent use of hot water.
Rheem has developed and installed as part of the 27 unit a “Flame Safe” protection system. This is unique to Rheem products and provides enhanced consumer protection and built in safety. There is a digital display which displays any error codes for easy fault diagnosis and service reminders.

Every so often even the best appliances can malfunction. If you find that your Rinnai Infinity 26 stops producing hot water, what can you do?
First of all, Rinnai as a brand has one of the longest warranties in the industry, so most issues will be covered under your purchase warranty. The Rinnai warranty covers parts and labour. If you find that your unit is not producing hot water like it should do, then there are options for you to try at home before having to call in a licensed gasfitter to troubleshoot your unit.
It is important to note that usually, tank less water heaters like the Rinnai Infinity 26, do not provide hot water straight away, unless it has been installed with a recirculation pump or a buffer tank. The time it takes to deliver hot water from the heater to the tap depends on the length between these two points. Often, it is for this reason, that some users will experience a shorter or longer wait for hot water. Although this can be frustrating for some users, it is not an actual problem with the unit but just a quirk that will require some patience for some users.
Often the issue of no hot water can be put down to other mitigating factors and no actual problem with your tank less hot water unit. For example: Your hot water can get cold during a shower because you have reduced the flow from the tap below the minimum flow rate required. By keeping the flow rate above the minimum required, you should have constant hot water.
If you are receiving warm water through your unit but it is just not hot enough then there are some reasons as to why this may be.
Your water temperature should be set between is set too low. Increase the temperature to approximately 50C. It may be that your water temperature setting has been bumped to a lower temperature.
Occasionally, you will experience a reduced water flow when the water filter or fixture aerator are clogged. This can also happen if there is a plumbing crossover, when you have cold water mixing with the hot water. One of the reasons for a plumbing crossover to occur is if you have a single-lever mixing valve installed, and it has failed.
Even when we think we have clean water flowing to our house, sediment and lime scale can build up inside the heat exchanger. The scale deposits act as an insulator and prevents the heat exchanger from transferring heat to your water.
If you have moved into a house with an already installed Rinnai Infinity 26 there could be issues with the gas valves. Sometimes the gas pressure needs to be reset or the valve has not been opened fully.
Along with lime scale build up, the venting system can also be subject to a build up of debris. It is vitally important that you keep an eye on the venting system and ensure that it is clean of debris at all times. The venting system must be able to provide enough fresh air for proper combustion.
Rinnai tank less hot water heaters like the Infinity 26 will have a self-diagnosis program for when issues arise. Any issue that is recognised will flash with a fault code. These fault codes will show on your digital, or status, monitor of the hot water temperature controller.
Rinnai error codes easily allow you to know exactly where the fault lies that is causing you to experience no hot water, or for your hot water heater to not operate at all.
Before calling a technician to come and source your fault and fix it, there are some steps that you can take as the owner of an Infinity 26 to troubleshoot the fault first.
First – check the power supply. Find a portable electric appliance – say hair straighteners or a toaster and plug this appliance into the same socket your Infinity 26 usually uses.
Second – If your Infinity 26 has a fitted controller, check that this hasn’t tripped and is still on.
Third – Check your gas supply. If you have gas to another appliance, like your stove – turn the stove top on and then turn a hot water tap on. If you lose the flame on the stove top whilst running the hot water – you probably have a gas supply issue.
Fourth – Check your water flow. Someone may have bumped the tap to the Infinity 26. Try opening your tap more.
Fifth – Isolate your water and then clean the filters and water restrictor.
Lastly – Are there any error codes showing on the controllers? If so, you will need to refer to the installation manual for further trouble shooting of the specific code/s.
If, after all of these steps you still find that your unit is not working, you can find an explanation of the Rinnai error codes in your operation manual under “Troubleshooting”. You will find a list of common error codes, a fault description relating to each code and a possible solution.
It is important to note that faults that are caused by an insufficient gas supply, an insufficient water supply, poor gas quality or water quality and installation or operation errors will not be covered by any Rinnai warranty that you hold.
All Rinnai products are designed and manufactured according to strict quality standards. However, should you have any problems with your hot water system you will need to contact a licenced gas fitting technician.
In New Zealand, gas fitting relates to any work that involves installing, altering or repairing gas appliances. Any work that is completed on your Rinnai Infinity 26 needs to be done by a licensed gas fitter. This is to comply with New Zealand law and to keep you and your family safe.

Storage water heaters – commonly referred to in New Zealand as Hot Water Cylinders – are the most popular type of water heaters installed in New Zealand homes. However, these have been traditionally fuelled by electricity.
A natural gas hot water cylinder can now be installed using both mains or low pressure. Mains pressure gas water heaters are the predominant style being installed in New Zealand. If you have natural gas available in your area, installing a gas fuelled storage water heater will help you save in your household running costs, as gas is a much less expensive energy source than electricity.
So how do they work?
Gas water heaters convert gas energy into heat and then transfer that heat to your water. They are connected to a cold water supply pipe and an outgoing hot water pipe, or system of pipes, that supplies heated water to your taps and appliances.
If you choose to go with a gas water heater, having one with an immersion heater will give you much more effective water heating. Immersion heaters heat water directly from inside the tank. A strong electric current is passed through the element to heat it up and it heats the water around it, working in a similar manner, although on a larger scale, to the average kitchen kettle. The thermostat serves to monitor the temperature of water in the tank and if it drops below a certain point, works to bring it back up to the required level.
Because you are using gas and the gas is being used by way of heating, a vent is required to allow toxic emissions from the burner to escape. These are piped up through the tank, and normally through your roof to the outside. Some newer, high-efficiency water heaters have fan-assisted vents that can be piped out through a wall.
Because the tank is under pressure, hot water exits through the hot water outlet at the top. When the hot water leaves, cold water enters through a diffuser dip tube that extends down inside the tank. The cold water pipe normally has a shutoff valve.
The drain valve at the water heater’s base is used for draining the tank or flushing sediment out of it.
A temperature-pressure (TP) relief valve near or on the top of the tank opens automatically if temperature or pressure exceeds safe levels.
There are two types of low pressure systems available: open vented systems and pressure reducing systems. This will range from 30 to 120kPa.
The open vented system has a cold water storage header tank and the pressure is provided by this tank. This will range from 30 to 120kPa.
The pressure reducing system relies on a pressure reducing valve to reduce the pressure below the mains pressure.
Mains pressure tanks work on the basis of the pressure in the tank is equal to the pressure on the incoming water supply. This will range from 120kPa to 1400kPa but is most typical between 350 and 700kPa.
If you are not familiar with what “kPa” is: it is a unit of pressure measurement that has largely replaced the pounds per square inch (psi) unit many people are familiar with.
If you are on low pressure and you have multiple areas where you require hot water, say multiple bathrooms or more than one tap running hot water at a time, you may also require a mains pressure service.
All gas storage water heaters must have adequate ventilation of the cylinder and a flue to remove exhaust gases.
They must also be serviced annually, flushed out regularly to remove water sediment at the bottom of the cylinder and checked to ensure that the vents are not blocked.
All gas water heaters sold in New Zealand must comply with minimum energy performance standards (MEPS).

The latest installation we did involved removing an old Rinnai unit which was not operating correctly at a home in Meadowbank, and replacing it with a Rheem 27 natural gas unit.
The job was pretty straight forward as the two units are similar installation-wise, meaning a quick and easy replacement for the customer at a lower cost. The ideal scenario for both sides. The customer now enjoys a consistent hot water supply and pays less for it!
The Rheem 27 gas water heater is an excellent gas unit, pumping out 27L of hot water a minute, and capable of servicing a 2-3 bathroom household. Available in both LPG and NG, it’s a great versatile unit that can be installed on any home.
