No matter where you look for a definition of “Califont” the world of online dictionaries defines it as “A gas water heater – NZ”. So, if you happen to be reading this and wondering what on earth we’re referring to when we use the term Califont – It is a tankless on demand gas powered water heater.
These water heaters are great in that they provide hot water only as it is needed. As there is no tank, there is no energy lost from having standby hot water waiting to be used. This can save you a fair amount of money each year.
A Califont Gas Heater works similarly to other water heaters with one exception – there is no large storage tank. When a hot water tap is turned on, cold water travels through a pipe into the unit. Either a gas burner or an electric element heats the water. As a result, califont water heaters deliver a constant supply of hot water. You don’t need to wait for a storage tank to fill up with enough hot water. This sounds great however there is a slight downfall – a califont water heater’s output limits the flow rate.
What does this mean? Well, typically, califont water heaters provide hot water at a rate of 7.6–15.2 litres per minute. While this may sound like a lot of water per minute, sometimes, even the largest model won’t be able to supply enough hot water for multiple uses in a large household. Taking a shower and running the dishwasher at the same time can stretch a califont water heater to its absolute limit. There is a way around this issue – you can install two or more califont water hea ters, connected in parallel for simultaneous demands of hot water. Or, another way of solving this problem is by installing separate califont water heaters for certain appliances – such as a clothes washer or dishwater – the ones that use a lot of hot water in your home.
For homes that use 155 litres or less of hot water daily, on demand water heaters can be 24%–34% more energy efficient than a conventional hot water tank heater. They can be 8%–14% more energy efficient for homes that use a lot of hot water. You can achieve even greater energy savings of 27%–50% if you install a demand water heater at each hot water outlet. ENERGY STAR® estimates that a typical family can save $100 or more per year with an ENERGY STAR qualified Califont water heater.
Although not necessarily the cheapest option to consider when looking at installing or replacing your water heater a Califont Gas heater will typically last longer and have lower operating and energy costs than other types. Over time this could offset the higher purchase price. You can expect to get a good 20 years plus use out of your Califont Gas Heater. They also have easily replaceable parts that extend their life by many more years.
To put this into perspective – your traditional hot water tank heater has a lifespan of around 10-15 years and if anything goes wrong prior to this, they generally need full replacement.
If you are still keen to move forward with a Califont Gas Heater then you will also need to consider the following:
Size
Fuel type and availability
Energy efficiency
Cost
These factors will have a bearing on the type of Califont Gas Heater you chose.

Staying comfortable through the chilly days of winter no longer has to mean paying high energy bills for the privilege. Given that New Zealanders attest around 23% of their entire household energy use to heating and cooling, it makes sense to choose a system that delivers the right amount of warmth to your home and allows you to avoid wasting energy and receiving huge energy bills.
Throughout New Zealand there are around 350,000 home that are connected to gas. Of these, around 40% of homes have twin-pack cylinders and 60% use reticulated gas. On top of these, there are hundreds of thousands of homes and small businesses that use LPG cabinet heaters and LPG for space and water heating.
As more and more people gain appreciation for better lifestyles, lower utility costs, energy efficiency and understanding of the devastating effects of carbon footprints, the number of gas connections are rising.
Whether you are considering gas heating or have made the change already, there is comfort in the knowledge that you’ve made the right choice and the reasons why. Traditionally, homes have been heated in a variety of ways – coal, oil, wood, electricity, gas and solar. Let’s see why gas heating is a wise investment in your home and comfort.
Natural Gas has lower carbon emissions than coal heating. It has less environmental impact than other fuel options for heating and the emissions from gas heating are 45% less than other conventional fuels and 30% less than oil.
It can be stored and transported through pipelines, small storage units, cylinders or tankers on land and sea. It is easier to transport than other fuel options and easier to preserve.
Most areas now have gas lines laid for residential use. If you do not have the ability to have gas connected in your area – not to fear! – gas can be provided for your family’s use in cylinders which you replace when they get low in gas.
When Natural Gas burns it does not have any smell, ash or smoke. This makes for a clean burn and very little environment impact. There is no heavy work involved in cleaning after gas is used, unlike a traditional fireplace.
Natural Gas is relatively abundant compared to other fossil fuels. It is currently estimated that New Zealand’s gas supply can service another 30 solid years however there are many new gas fields that are being discovered and opened up so the supply is not likely to stop any time soon.
If there is a leak, Natural Gas and LPG are lighter than air and tends to dissipate when there is a leakage. There are no unnerving situations like what can happen with Propane, which being heavier than air, collects into explosive pockets.
Natural Gas and LPG are cheaper than electricity. Gas is quicker when used for cooking and heating water and majority of gas appliances are cheaper than electric appliances.
Gas appliances do not create electric fields which are unhealthy near your homes.
Gas heat emits 23% less carbon dioxide than oil heat.
Gas heat has averaged 30% to 50% less expensive than oil heat every year since 2002.
You typically can recoup conversion costs within five years, depending on gas prices and usage.
Producing and delivering electricity is 2/3 less efficient. Only 30% of the energy used to generate electricity actually reaches your home. This means 70% of that energy is lost along the way. Part of it is lost while burning energy to create electricity. The rest is lost in the transmission and distribution of the electricity to your home.
90% of the natural gas that enters the pipeline reaches you, the consumer. Only a mere 10% of the energy is lost in the process.
If all you have is a gas fuelled continuous flow hot water system, then you’ll notice that you will never run out of hot water. Ever!
If you have gas space heating then you will benefit from powerful, energy efficient heat that is very cost-effective, and that heats large spaces quickly. You can keep the whole house warm, which is a major bonus for families.
Natural gas appliances are faster and use less energy than electric appliances.
Natural gas dryers use less energy and can dry clothes faster than electric dryers.
Natural gas hot water heaters heat water twice as fast as electric water heaters.
Choosing natural gas appliances is an easy way to reduce your impact on the environment without sacrificing comfort or style
Most natural gas appliances work even when the electricity is out.
Since the natural gas system is underground, outages are rare.
Most natural gas appliances cost less money to operate than electric appliances.
Long gone are the days where your only option was your only option. No matter what your heart desires in 2016 you are guaranteed to find multiple choices to satisfy your wants and needs. If you are looking at replacing your current hot water cylinder or looking for hot-water options for your new build – Tankless Water Heating is a great choice. Why?
Everyone wants to save money. The traditional way to heat water in New Zealand is to use a hot water cylinder. However, energy losses can be high from this form of heating. Energy is lost through the walls of the cylinder even if no hot water is being used. On top of that, the pipes from the cylinders are almost never insulated and so energy is lost here too. Energy loss = Money lost.
What is appealing to consumers looking at tankless water heating? Well, the benefits are definitely starting to stack high and look good. A tankless unit has a lifespan of nearly 20 years. Hot water cylinders on the other hand are lucky to last 10-12 years. Instead of continually heating a cylinder full of water, only when a hot water tap is turned on in the home is cold water is drawn into the water heater and heated. You are not going to empty the water heater with a high bath because there isn’t a cylinder to empty. Tankless water heaters therefore can achieve a greater efficiency than standard cylinder heaters. Tankless units are easy to maintain. Because they don’t house water 24 hours a day, corrosion is virtually eliminated. A tankless hot water heater does away with the need for a dedicated space inside your house – typically a hot water cupboard. These units are small and wall mountable for added convenience.
Tankless Water Heating – Take Your Pick!
The options available for tankless water heaters are expanding all the time. Choosing a well-known brand will help safeguard your family from maintenance and usage issues in the future. Amongst some of the brands available Rinnai, Bosch and Rheem have many options available for almost every requirement.
Rinnai – Rinnai INFINITY offers options that accommodate 16-32litre/minute capacities. The various models offer energy efficiencies of between 80% and 95%. They are also able to boast between 15% and 28% cost savings over electric cylinder heating. All INFINITY models come with a 10 year heat exchange warranty and a 3 year parts warranty.
Bosch – Bosch offers a great range of German engineered tankless hot water systems. They offer 10 – 26 litre/minute capacities. They run on both Natural Gas (NG) and LP Gas. Bosch Highflow units are gas continuous-flow hot water systems that are suitable for 1 – 3 bathroom homes. They are compact, space-saving and easy to install. Their models come with a 10year heat exchange warranty and a 3 year parts warranty.
Rheem – Rheem Continuous Flow products offer options that accommodate 16-27litre/minute capacities. They have a 6* Energy Star rating. They have both interior and exterior installation options. They have a unique flame-safe overheat protection system. The Rheem Continuous Flow 27 has an improved minimum start-up flow rate. Their models also come with a 10 year heath exchange warranty and a 3 year parts warranty.
Energy efficiency is a catchphrase that is bandied around but what does it really mean when looking at a new appliance for your home? The Energy Star rating is based on the amount of energy input required to raise the temperature from 15C to 60C over a body of 200 litres of water. Why only 60C? Because it is the minimum temperature that is required for hot water heating systems to prevent the growth of bacteria. Because a tankless hot water system has no tank, the temperatures are usually set at around 50C – which saves you money. What do the stars stand for? Each extra star featured on the front of the unit, means an additional 10% or more savings on running costs.
The higher the rating, the more efficient the water heater. So, although energy efficiency seems to be a reasonably recent terminology it actually is worth paying attention to and adding to your list of considerations when looking at your home water heating options.

Designed for the home owners that want to reduce their running costs and also keep their carbon footprint to a minimum, the Rinnai Hotflo Hot Water Heater Pump is the green solution to water heating.
The Hotflo’s key benefits include it’s ability to be retrofitted to virtually any brand of electric hot water cylinder. It is also a very simple installation which usually takes less than a day to complete. It also offered a significantly reduced carbon footprint alongside reduced energy consumption, making it a win all round. You can save up to 60% on your energy with the Hotflo.
The Hotflo Heat Pump is suitable for external installation on domestic applications that connects to mains pressure hot water cylinders.
A couple of things to keep in mind with the Hotflo
While it will operate at temperatures ranging between -7 °C to 45 °C, it’s output and efficiency will reduce as temperatures lower. For example, with an outside temperature of 20 °C, the Hotflo Heat Pump will deliver 3kW of heat output for every 1kW used. However, with an outside temperature of 10 °C, it will deliver 2.6kW per every 1kW used. It is also not suitable as a spa of swimming pool heater.
Certain water qualities are also not suitable for the Hotflo so it is important to check before getting one installed. The following are examples of water that would need to be treated before being used through the Hotflo:
Hard water areas such as Wanganui.
Aggressive water areas such as Christchurch
Bore water areas where aggressive or hard water is found.
It is also not warrantied against corrosion in geothermal areas such as Rotorua where sulfur is present in high levels in the atmosphere.
